The Frog

Not a tree frog, I'm told, as the toes don't have pads on them. He's about the size of a toddler's fist. I expected something much bigger considering how much noise he is making!

  • Now....we have to name him/her! IHop?

  • ah...I would spell it "iHop" (before my brother steals my idea).

  • The name iHop works for me. It reminds me of an experiment I performed back in my university days. It was a bit of a long process, but if you are interested in seeing if the results are the same now as we concluded in the seventies, let me know and I will give you the detail. (probably off the blog - in a separate email). It may involve renaming the critter iHope.

  • It's out there screeching again. I still think it's a funny sounding frog. I can't usually get near it so if it involves me actually interacting with the frog, it's not going to work :)

  • Knowing Dad, it has something to do with a pot of not-yet-boiling water.

  • I should warn you, that if you are considering the barbecue frog legs idea, you should NOT name the little critter. Lynda use to name the calves we would have (back in our cattle raising days) and I would have a heck of a time getting her to approve having one butchered for beef once it had a name. Having hamburgers from little Jesus was perhaps the most difficult. He was born from a cow when we had no bulls on the farm. Immaculate conception and all that.

  • Sort of like that pig with the wooden leg you guys used to have.

  • No, no! That pig you are thinking of was really a SPECIAL pig. That is why we outfitted him with the wooden leg. This was purely a scientific study. And it did not involve not-yet-boiling water. Perhaps we could have included that in a follow up experiment. Kind of like the unanticipated applications developed from the work on the Hubble Space Telescope.

  • I think we would all like to see/hear about your 'University Days' experiment. Maybe with pictures? Do tell.
Note: I refused to dissect the frog in school but instead turned in a booklet of leaves, all properly named. I gathered leaves in and around Lake Arrowhead and took them to the local Ranger, who had nothing to do and helped me name them. Much better than the dissect-thing!

  • Well, as long as you asked. . .Okay. But it will take a while to put my thoughts together. It was forty years ago. I will put the story in a separate post later.

I don't have any photos of the original experiment. They are all property of the school. Maybe I can find some that will give you the idea. I will give the net a search, the findings were pretty ‘earth shattering’ CalStateNorthridge may have published them. Or perhaps it will simply be a narrative.

Stay tuned, but don’t hold your breath – getting this new house done takes precedence.

  • Hurray! Can't wait.
