ELK ENCOUNTER
On the way home Tuesday evening , Thumper and I encountered a herd of at least ten elk. They were on the road (Rickey Canyon) in front of us but were kind enough to step off the road and watch us while I put fresh batteries in our old(er) camera. This is one of the shots I took of them. The buck is on our far right. He had a very nice ‘rack’…sorry hunters, they're out of season. :0)
They were only about 25 feet away when they stopped to observe us. I have cropped and touched up the picture. The camera is a 1999 model and had been retired for a newer unit. Of course, that one is now outdated too.

Oops. He (the buck) is on our left and there is female further left.

They are huge! Wow. I don't believe I've ever actually seen an elk.

I have eaten deer (a.k.a. venison) in either Australia or New Zealand where they raise them as Americans do cows. I have never had occasion to try elk. Lynda says elk is significantly better to eat than deer.
Hope I haven't offended any vegetarians. :o(
Sylvia’s Mother has an interesting story about when she was much younger and had a meal in France.

Venison is fairly common in Germany, I've had it there with mushroom sauce.
Locally you can get wild boar in the autumn but I haven't tried it. They also eat goat (which I have tried but in a rich sauce so that it really could have been anything).
I'll have to ask my mother about that meal ;)
